MINIMUM AGE - Campers must be entering the 4th grade in the fall after camp. Beginning chorus students are accepted in the junior level groups and may be moved to senior level groups as deemed appropriate by the director. Senior chorus students should have some talent or previous experience or training. Orchestra students will be placed on ABILITY at the time of auditions and not necessarily age. Auditions may be conducted at camp the first day. Graduating Seniors and College Students may apply as counselors. All applicants should contact Nichole Harshbarger at

Choral Students: No Auditions
- Beginners through advanced. Choir students should have some natural talent or previous experience & training.
Intermediate String Students:
- 2+ Years private lessons or orchestra participation
- All students must submit written instructor recommendations
Advanced String Students:
- CMEA Capital Section Honor Orchestra, rated level 4 & above.
- Sight-reading, advanced intonation & tone quality.
- Previous ensemble experience REQUIRED
*A short audition may be required for new orchestra students and for placement in one of the two orchestras. |

Beginners accepted in junior groups. Senior choir students should have some talent & previous experience or training. All students should be prepared for an informal interview process and assessment. All singers should have a desire to sing in a choral setting.
Senior Boys' Choir Designed for young men, with mostly changed voice, in grades 9 - college.
Junior Boys' Choir Designed for boys with mostly unchanged voices, in grades 4 - 8.
Senior Girls' Choir Designed for young ladies, in grades 9 - college.

2012 Audition Requirements
Description of String Orchestra:
The students in this orchestra are generally in high school and the upper grades of middle school.
Level of Ability & Suggested Audition Repertoire:*
It is recommended that all players have previous ensemble experience and be well advanced in the command of their instrument. Confidence in sight-reading and advanced control of intonation and tone quality is expected. Solos should be of the level required for CMEA Capital Section Honor Orchestra or Band, or solos rated level 4 and above.
Audition requirements:
- 2 octaves of any major scale in quarter notes, at a tempo of 144
- 2 octaves of any melodic minor scale in quarter notes at a tempo of 120
- 3-4 minute excerpt of an unaccompanied solo (skip over long rests) that demonstrates your ability.*
All musicians will be asked to sight-read.
*When deciding on solo literature, consult your private teacher, school music teacher, or SYS conductor for ideas and assistance. Remember to list your solo selection on your application.

Intermediate String Orchestra Designed for intermediate students who:
- are able to read first position notes on all 4 strings without difficulty.
- know how to play in the following major keys: D, G, F, and C.
- are able to respond to accidentals.
- have begun 3rd position if he/she plans on trying out for first violin.
- know martelé, detaché, and legatto bowing.
- are at Suzuki equivalents - Book 2 or equivalent
- meet the minimum age requirement - 4th grade
